POSTERIOR CAPSULAR THICKENING & LASER TREATMENT AFTER CATARACT SURGERY YAG Laser Capsulotomy

If your vision begins to deteriorate after cataract surgery, this is because there is a membrane inside your eye that begins to thicken and becomes misty. This is a natural progression and can then obstruct your vision. This membrane usually protects the back of the eye from complications during cataract surgery and up to 3 months later. After this period, it is usually safe to interrupt this membrane. A special type of laser called YAG Laser normally does this.
Before the laser is carried out, you will have some eye drops to dilate your pupils. You will then be taken to a darkened room to sit in front of a machine similar to the one used in the clinic to examine your eyes. You will see a red light, perhaps like a firework display, and hear a clicking noise. It will not be painful. The treatment only takes a few minutes.
You may find that your sight improves at once or within a few days. Then you may wish to see your optician who can tell you if you need to change your glasses.
